1. Who We Are

Wortschatz is a German vocabulary learning app. For privacy questions, contact us using the details in the Contact section below.

2. Information We Collect

• Account information. When you create an account we use Clerk, our authentication provider, to store your email address and a display name. We never see or store your password.
• Learning content you create. Vocabulary words, chapters, stories, generated audio, chat messages with the AI tutor, and your review/progress data. This is stored to provide the service and sync your progress.
• Images you choose to scan. When you take or pick a photo to extract German text, the image is sent to our backend and to our AI providers solely to extract the text. We do not retain the image after processing.
• Usage data. Counts of AI actions used per day, to enforce daily limits.

We do not collect location data, advertising identifiers, or contacts, and we donot track you across other apps or websites.

3. How We Use Information

• To provide and personalize the learning experience.
• To generate vocabulary cards, translations, stories, audio, and tutor responses via our AI providers (Anthropic and OpenAI).
• To enforce fair-use daily limits.
• To screen content for safety (content moderation — see below).
• To secure your account and prevent abuse.

4. Content Moderation

To keep the app safe and comply with the app stores' content rules, content you submit (such as chapter titles and descriptions, scanned text, and chat messages) and certain AI-generated output may be processed through automated moderation — for example, safety classifiers that detect hate, sexual, violent, or self-harm content. Content that is reported by a user may also be reviewed. Flagged content may be refused, removed, or blocked. We process this content only to provide and protect the service, not for advertising or tracking, and it is not used to train our providers' models under our API configuration.

5. Third-Party Processors

• Clerk — authentication and account management.
• Anthropic and OpenAI — AI generation (text, audio, image text extraction). Content sent for processing is governed by their respective enterprise/API terms and is not used to train their models under our API configuration.

6. Device Permissions

• Camera / Photos — only used when you explicitly take or select a photo to extract German text. Access is requested at the moment you use the feature.
• Face ID (iOS) — used only to protect your saved sign-in session on the device.

7. Data Retention and Deletion

You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time fromSettings → Delete Account. Deletion removes your words, chapters, stories, progress, and your authentication identity. This action is immediate and cannot be undone.

8. Children's Privacy

The app is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last Updated" date above.
